Description

When Tia reluctantly agrees to look after Bindu, her peevish, grumpy granddaughter, during half term, the last thing that she expects is to spend the week unravelling the theft of a seventeenth century painting Head of a Girl, ‘Hedova’.

Hoping to start a new and more exciting life, Robert sets himself up as an art thief. His first target? A picture from the Whitler Gallery, where Tia and her recently widowed colleague Douglas work.

Follow Douglas and Tia, an unlikely detective duo, as they investigate the theft and race frantically across the city to prevent the painting from being destroyed. Can Robert prove that he’s got what it takes to embark on a life of crime? And can Tia and Douglas save Hedova?

What’s Going on at The Whitler? is a gentle detective story with elements of humour and fantasy, all punctuated by commentary from a Greek chorus of talking portraits for a unique twist.

After graduating, Alison Mukherjee went to India as a volunteer teacher, continuing to live there for eight years before returning to settle in England with her Bengali husband and children. Her working life has been divided between teaching in secondary and higher educational establishments, mostly in the area of Religious Studies, and as a Local Authority social worker. In 2022 she was awarded a PhD in translation studies.

A gripping story with interesting characters. The suspense is built up very effectively and the ending comes as a huge surprise to the reader.

Eleanor Nesbitt (Guest Review) - 30 Sep, 2022

I thoroughly enjoyed What's Going on at the Whitler? It's full of surprises, page after page, and I love the quirky characters and the sharply observed detail of behaviour and backdrop - whether the gallery or the graveyard. Here's hoping for a sequel before too long!

Lindsey Buss (Guest Review) - 30 Sep, 2022

A delightful and highly entertaining crime caper with a very distinctive cast of characters! It has a little bit of everything – suspense, humour, family relationships and a little gentle romance. A very satisfying read!

Lee Gunn (Guest Review) - 01 Oct, 2022

I found this a great read - original, enjoyable and satisfying. It was good to spend time with each of the quirky and sympathetic characters - I felt I knew them all personally. The writing is vivid and lively, and the narrative moves along nicely.

Tess (Guest Review) - 01 Oct, 2022

I loved this book mainly because the characters were believable and likeable. I really wanted to know what happened to them. It was easy to read but had some depth to it too. Altogether an enjoyable read which would appeal to a wide variety of readers.

Dara (Guest Review) - 01 Oct, 2022

Cleverly written, a book with wide appeal. Intriguing and very entertaining.

WM (Guest Review) - 28 Oct, 2022

I really enjoyed this book. An interesting plot and believable characters. I particularly enjoyed the relationship between the grandmother and her granddaughter. The conversations between the pictures (echoed from a previous book) are a clever device.

SJ (Guest Review) - 04 Oct, 2022

I read this cleverly plotted and beautifully written book in two sittings. It is a pleasure to spend time in the company of Mukherjee's characters, and the book contains unexpected touches of fantasy that add to its appeal.
