For many people Brazil is the pure essence of Latin America: exotic, exciting, complex and unpredictable. The host country of the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympics is an enticing enigma, so what can you really expect if you’re heading there?

Stephen R A’Barrow first went to South America in the 1990s and travelled extensively there. Now he is married to a Brazilian and has lived in the country for more than six years, so he is the ideal candidate to lift the lid on the real Brazil behind the stories of Rio nightlife, micro bikinis, gang wars and Latin culture.

In a very frank and often hilarious combination of notebook and travelogue, A’Barrow gives a true flavour of a country that is intriguing, exasperating and astonishing in equal measure.

  1. Book Guild

(From Amazon): I have visited Brazil several times and always wondered why the travel writers of yesteryear and now have never plunged in to the pure delights, the friendliness, and the utter chaos that Brazil offers travellers.

This book leaves nothing unturned and is sometimes as excruciatingly honest as it is hilarious. Stephen a’Barrow has approached this definitive guide to Brazil with courage and wit. (Though if you per chance share the same surname as the author it may be best to change your surname via deed poll. Nobody comes away unscathed!)

This book is well timed and a vital guide to have in one’s carry bag for all those die-hard football fans who will be attending the World Cup in a just a week’s days time.

  2. Book Guild

(From Amazon): This book is straight from the shoulder, laugh out loud one minute and astounding the next. Great read, a must have for anyone even thinking of going to Brazil for football or otherwise. No sublety here, tells it like it is;none of this “I’ve heard” or “It’s said” rubbish. This is someone who has been there, done that and lived the life. Some of the descriptions of various experiences are hilarious but also there is a wealth of information too. There is more to this book than meets the eye,it works on different levels. A highly entertaining anecdotal book for sure but one with some fascinating insights and for the traveller very useful advice.

For the non-traveller? Just enjoy for the pure entertainment value of a sharp observer in his element.

  3. Book Guild

(From Amazon): An acutely observed and well written travelogue that gives the reader a warts and all view of life in Brazil from the perspective of an Englishman abroad; albeit one that has actually lived, loved, worked and invested in Brazil.

Useful if you’re travelling to Brazil, entertaining if you want a good read and a must have “laugh-out loud book” for all those sunshine moments on the beach this summer.

So, if you want the inside track on all things Brazilian – especially during World Cup Year – I recommend that you buy and read this book right now!
