The murders were motiveless; the investigation is questionable; the defence lawyer is clueless.

Max Hope wakes up in hospital to find that he is under arrest for murdering his wife and children. However, a severe head trauma causing retrograde amnesia has wiped all memory of his adult life.

While convalescing, Max attempts to piece his memories back together with the help of a psychologist to find out why – or if – he committed the murders.

In each session Max’s returning memories reveal his past in fragmented episodes, but the more he learns, the less he likes.

His life as a seemingly successful family man unravels into a story of failure, paranoia and lies…

Dean Moynihan was born and raised in Harrow. He attended Park High School, Middlesex, and Roehampton University. Dean currently lives in Stanmore, Middlesex and is a trained actor. He’s currently writing his third novel and his play, “Human Issue” has played in London and is due to tour in 2019. Dean is also developing a screenplay and this is his debut published novel.

As a reader, I felt both involved and removed in a peculiar way, specific to good psychological thrillers . As Max Hope gradually recalls his past, he becomes self-aware that he has not always been a loveable character.
Dean Moynihan introduces us to likeable identifiable characters.
Max discovers he’s no hero as he battles with his own past and his painful acceptance.
Finally Woken has a dark philosophical wit which it’s darkly comic moments had me laughing out loud at the antics of the characters.
To write a character who’s no hero, an anti hero, who points out the deepest and greatest flaws in humanity yet also asks us to sympathise with him, and consequently, admit that we too are guilty of these things is a stroke of genius by Dean Moynihan.
