A detective novel from the pen of Ian McFadyen, author of Little White Lies and Lillia’s Diary, featuring DI Steve Carmichael. Once again, deft plotting and subtle characterization provide an enthralling and morally searching read and a masterly update on the classic English crime novel.

Set in rural Lancashire, this quietly gripping novel takes place during a winter freeze. Heavy snows have been forecast and everyone is hunkering down. In the village of Moulton Bank, however, Detective Inspector Steve Carmichael and his wife have been invited to a Valentine?s Day dinner party given by local celebrity Caroline Lovelace, the presenter of a popular TV chatshow. Neither she nor her MP husband has ever taken any notice of the DI before, so Carmichael is feeling a little bit flattered.

When one of Lovelaces’ guests fails to turn up, however, and is later found to have seemingly abandoned his car in the middle of a nowhere, DI Carmichael begins an investigation that will lead him into unexpected places and to unexpected people.

(From Amazon): Just finished reading this book and thought it was brilliant. They are getting better and better. Enjoyed Ian’s first book, 2nd one too but this is his best so far so keep going! I love reading and do enjoy a good suspense! You think you have the murderer pinned and then you don’t! The characters are cleverly sculpted and even when you think you understand them, you find you don’t really know them at all! I find Carmichael entertaining and funny in places too – quite a likeable character. The family characters are expanding which I like. There are also quite a lot of dodgy characters to look out for and some not very nice at all, but don’t want to ruin it for you! A must read!

(From Amazon): I enjoyed this fourth book by this author and it did not disappoint. Genuine characters, well placed in the plot and the murders methodically resolved by the efficient and likeable Inspector Carmichael and his team. The sub-plots involving his family are also plausible and relevant to the read.

(From Amazon): Another great read from Ian McFadyen. A superb plot with a great ending. The characters are very interesting and as you get to know them you get see what they are really like and how they impact on others. I like how Steve Carmichael’s family life is often entwined in the story line as it shows a level of normalcy from the day to day issues facing a police officer. A must read for all those that enjoy a good detective thriller…
