When the eminent mathematician and former government advisor Marcus Ardleigh is found hanged in his home in the sleepy Lancashire village of Moulton Bank, at first it looks to be a simple case of suicide. Very soon, however, Inspector Steve Carmichael begins to suspect that the death is altogether more complicated than it first appears.

As his investigations lead him and his team ever deeper into Ardleigh’s murky past and into the tortured lives of his lukewarm friends and bitter enemies, dark and dangerous secrets begin to emerge…

In this, the fourth in his popular series of crime novels featuring DI Steve Carmichael, Ian McFadyen shows himself a master of his game, once again weaving a deft plot and creating a gallery of beguiling characters to produce a gripping mystery that will keep readers guessing to the end.

(From Amazon): Having read all the Steve Carmichael books this is my favourite one yet. It has a great plot that will keep you guessing. If you haven’t read the other books in the series it doesn’t matter as this will stand alone. I have, however, enjoyed watching the characters grow and develop from the first book ‘Little White Lies’. A thoroughly enjoyable read – I’m looking forward to the next one!

  2. Rated 5 out of 5

(From Amazon): An intriguing title that enticed me to read more. Was not disappointed. Shades of ‘Midsummer Murders’, but with a bit more bite. A good mix of Inspector Carmichael’s family life with his professional life in solving murders on his patch. I like the author’s style and it was an enjoyable read and I look forward to reading more in the series.
