Who'd be a Patient

Who'd be a Patient
John Paterson was a rural GP from 1951 to 1975. Of course, this was a time of enormous change in healthcare: the new NHS was finding its feet, and new medicines and radical approaches to treatment were emerging. Our memories are surprisingly short, and so it is sobering to read here of the days before mobile phones, when the doctor might have to send a patient's wife down the road to the phone box to call an ambulance. In the agricultural fens of East Anglia in the 1950s, hardly any working people had a telephone at home. Not only that, but some farmworkers' children really were sewn into their vests for the winter, as Paterson discovers to his utter amazement during a home visit.

John Paterson's book has a friendly and humorous tone that is very reminiscent of James Herriot's. He conjures up a character-list of patients, fellow doctors, friends and neighbours that not only ring true but are thoroughly engaging and touching by turns. When his own health problems begin, and he finds himself on the other side of the fence as a patient, his sense of humour doesn't desert him, and the insight he gains enriches his working life.
