Virgil's Time
For Pamela Border, a young war widow, the church bells ringing out across Britain to celebrate the end of the Second World War, have a bitter-sweet resonance. A peaceful future is what everyone has longed for, but Pamela must face it on her own, bringing up her baby son, Virgil, without his father, her dashing US airman husband who was killed in the last year of the war.
Virgil will grow up surrounded by the love of his mother and grandmother in Whitchurch, Somerset, and supported by his doting grandparents in the USA. As he grows into a positive, determined young man, Virgil benefits from his trans-Atlantic background, attending an English public school, then studying medicine at Harvard. But the post-war world is far from peaceful, and Virgil is drawn into another conflict, serving as a front-line doctor in Vietnam.
The effects of war will continue to mar the second half of the twentieth century, and new weapons will be wielded to leave more children fatherless, cripple the bodies of soldiers and civilians, and destroy the minds of those who witness horrors beyond their imagination. When Virgil?s own equilibrium is shattered, he starts to question the motives and desires that have shaped his life so far. Only if he can come to terms with his experiences and find a way to put them to good use, will he be able to set his life back on track.
Virgil?s Time is the time of a generation born out of war, sharing the hopes and fears of the sixty years between Hiroshima and the War on Terror.
