The Touch of Durrell: A Passion for Animals
For more than 30 years Jeremy Mallinson was Gerald Durrell?s right-hand man at the Jersey Wildlife Preservation Trust. Widely regarded as a trailblazer in the world of conservation, Jeremy Mallinson has devoted his life to the care and collection of endangered species.
Spending over two years in the regular army of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland introduced him to the dramatic scenery and wonderful wildlife of southern and central Africa. This first taste of exploring exotic places and seeing a diversity of animals in their own habitats was the springboard towards a career that would be driven by an almost missionary zeal for conservation, and he could not have been more at home than at Gerald Durrell?s zoo in Jersey.
Expeditions to Africa and beyond followed, with the trials and tribulations of collecting animals for captive breeding, searching for ?missing? species, and helping the world?s leading conservationists manage animals both in zoos and in the wild.
Jeremy Mallinson?s involvement has been instrumental in the survival of several species, including two of his favourite animal groups: gorillas and Lion tamarins. It is Mallinson?s marvellous ability to relate to animals and convey his enthusiasm for them to the rest of us with infectious vigour, that have made him such a powerful champion for wildlife around the world. Becoming Director of the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust after the death of Gerald Durrell, Jeremy Mallinson continued the work of his mentor and brought the Trust into the 21st century with a vision to continue to fight to redress the balance between animal kind and human kind.
