The Life and Times of a Fall Guy

The Life and Times of a Fall Guy

Working with top actors and directors from the late 1940s through to the 1980s, professional stuntman Joe Powell has tumbled out of planes, narrowly missed falling down a 2,000-foot ravine, and been killed off in countless spectacular ways, in films ranging from the swashbuckling Crimson Pirate of 1952 through to the high-action Bond movies of later decades. He worked alongside the likes of Gregory Peck and director John Huston, and even had an acting role in Zulu.

Joe Powell recounts not only the work that has earned him the description as the 'daddy of British stuntmen', but also describes his experiences as an active soldier prior to his entry into the film industry. As a Commando, he was also able to develop his skills as a heavyweight boxer and keep-fit enthusiast, which later stood him in good stead for leaping off the Titanic, jumping off bridges and falling out of planes without knowing how to fit a parachute!

Another side to this homegrown daredevil is also revealed, in his inventiveness during lean times in the stunt business. As well as crewing on the historic transatlantic voyage of the Mayflower II, he has come up with various entrepreneurial schemes making the most of his other talents, although all have had some connection with his first love - the film industry.
