The Infinite River

The Infinite River
Imagine a world where everything that has ever been dreamt of exists. A place where giant octopus-like creatures fly through the sky. Where a fortress is built inside the corpse of a long-dead giant and where people can move at the speed of thought. Now imagine no longer, for this is The Other Place. Trillions of light years away yet startlingly close, with a logic so twisted it has to be true. Your imagination is only the first step- dare you take the next? As Greenery Jackson, an ordinary twelve-year-old schoolboy from an ordinary seaside town in north-west England, soon discovers, The Other Place is not necessarily a very nice place to be. In fact, it’s downright dangerous. A motley tribe of evil-looking monsters known as the Violents is making a comeback and for some reason they’ve got Greenery in their sights. With his two companions – the diminutive, shape-shifting Punster and the tough Djinditsu warrior Towelyn – Greenery may be the only hope that The Other Place has. Thrilling adventure, outrageous jokes and cutting-edge science all collide explosively in this mind-bogglingly brilliant novel.

Author: reviewer 101
Fantasy novel takes you to The Other Place

If you take the collective imaginations of Dr Seuss, Roald Dahl, Lewis Carroll, C S Lewis, Tolkien, J K Rowling et al, treble them, the answer you’ll come up with is Michael R Jones!

Anyone who has read my reviews over the years will know that I’m not the most ardent fan of this particular genre, however in his debut novel, The Infinite River: Book One of Tales from the Other Place ( published in hardback by The Book Guild), Michael R Jones has produced an amazingly entertaining piece of work and I predict that it will be enjoyed by readers from 12 to 82 who are prepared to free their imagination and go with the fantasy. From the moment I started reading the book I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough to see what the author’s mind-blowingly fertile brain could throw at me next!

The story revolves around Greenery Frankincense Jackson, an average 12-year-old, albeit with a slightly hippy name, from an ordinary English seaside town who, after chancing upon a strange key in a school cupboard, suddenly finds himself flung trillions of light years away to The Other Place. It is a place occupied by such fantastic beings that one wonders how on earth (or perhaps not!) the author could conjure up such an array of characters. Unfortunately for Greenery he soon discovers that The Other Place isn’t as tranquil as he at first thought when he is pursued by strange ethereal horse-like creatures. He is saved from the ‘Night Mares’ by Night Light, the Punster, or Pun-Monster, who can change shape at will, but only if the shape is a pun or a play on words. The main villains of the story are the Violents who, from their fortress in the rotting corpse of the giant Ben Nevis (oh yes, fertile imagination or what!) will stop at nothing to take over The Other Place, and Greenery, for some reason, seems to be the main focus of their evil intentions . Apart from the Punster, he is aided along the way by, among others, Towelyn, the Djinditsu warrior and a pink and green flashing polka dot flying Cecephelophopus!

As you would expect from a writer with such a vivid imagination, the book is full of dark humour, outrageous jokes and puns – “I’d like you to meet my mate Dave. He’s a motor pike”. “’Lo” said the fish on wheels, “climb aboard” – has plenty of science, some excellent original poetry to introduce the chapters and, most welcome of all, a great storyline of such pure escapist fantasy that it makes you forget, for a while at least, a world beset with wars, famine and financial turmoil.

Michael R Jones was born in Lancashire and studied at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. He is a successful actor and drama teacher and The Infinite River is his debut novel and the first story in the Tales from the Other Place trilogy. Fast forward to the future, if the remaining two instalments carry on in the same vein, we may yet see Greenery Jackson and his motley crew in super animation on the big screen!
