The Half-Closed Door

The Half-Closed Door
Alan Tritton was born into a banking family on his father’s side and a Scottish military family on his mother’s side. He took part in an expedition to Norway, before being commissioned into the 1st Battalion Seaforth Highlanders. He was wounded on active service in Malaya. After leaving the army he joined the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey. He then joined Barclays Bank, becoming a director of the main board in 1974, and eventually retiring in 1991. Alan served on the committees of the British Trans-Arctic Expedition, and Chris Bonington’s 1975 British Everest South-West Face Expedition. He established and chaired the Calcutta Tercentenary Trust, for which he was appointed a CBE. In 2001, as a former non-executive director, he was unsuccessfully sued by the Equitable Life Assurance Society. Alan is married and lives in Essex. He has three children and ten grandchildren.
