The Colour was Red

The Colour was Red
By the end of Queen Victoria's reign the British Empire covered a quarter of the globe. On maps of the world it was coloured red. Red was also the colour of the blood spilled at Amritsar where, on 13th April 1919, General Dyer's troops opened fire on a peaceful crowd of men, women and children gathered in the Jallianwala Bagh, killing nearly 400 of them. There were also tragedies in two other areas formerly coloured red, Nigeria - and the Biafran war - and apartheid South Africa.
Alan Shelley's powerful novel shows how events in these three countries - India, Nigeria and South Africa - shaped the lives of one English family over two generations. Soldier Charles Cresswell, appalled by the Amritsar massacre, resigns his commission in the Indian army and then works for the India he loves. His son, Matthew, does what he can to educate and train disadvantaged Nigerians, but is horrified by the violence which erupts against the Ibo tribe, who include his closest friend, Peter. Charles' daughter, Jenny, champions the cause of the black and coloured South Africans against the Afrikaner regime.
