Suleiman's Gold
In Rider Haggard?s 1885 classic King Solomon's Mines, the indomitable Allan Quatermain sets out in search of the long lost source of the fabulous gold of Ophir. Suleiman?s Gold picks up the trail where Haggard left off ? with the premise that Quatermain was mistaken; that the goldfields of Southern Africa were not those of biblical legend.
Quatermain?s grandson Rider has long been in thrall to the romance of the Solomon story and has dedicated much of his life to theorising on the whereabouts of the fabled Ophir. Along with his trusty sidekick ? the indefatigable Hutcheon Graham (a man as sceptical as Rider is awestruck) ? he scours the Horn of Africa from the holy Moslem city of Harar in north-eastern Ethiopia to the mysterious and remote south-western veld.
Suleiman?s Gold is narrated by Rider's son Alan Quatermain ? a young man who, once of age, inevitably becomes seduced by his father's lifelong quest. Together, he, Rider, Hutcheon and a cast of characters that ranges from real historical figures to classic fictional heroes (including the notorious Harry Flashman) embark on a series of adventures and escapades that span generations.
But when Alan is captured by Somali shifta (bandits) in the pursuit of his father's dream, does this spell the end of the line, or is it the final piece in one of the most gripping yet deadly puzzles of the last three millennia?
Cast in the mould of the 19th-century African romance, yet with playful modern twists, Suleiman?s Gold is part homage, part sequel, part reinvention. It is, it goes without saying, all adventure!
