Sir Francis Richard Fraser was one of the great British medical educators and administrators of the twentieth century, and yet today he and his achievements have been largely forgotten - both by the medical profession and by the public at large.‚Ä®
Born in Edinburgh in 1885, Francis Fraser was relatively unusual in that, after completing his medical studies in Edinburgh, he went to the United States to undertake research at the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research in New York City. After distinguished service at London's St Bartholomew's and Hammersmith hospitals, he went on to direct the nation's Emergency Medical Services during World War II. Perhaps his greatest achievement, however, came in the wake of the war when, as¬†the first Professor of Medicine at Hammersmith and later as Director of the British Postgraduate Medical Federation, he helped revolutionize medical education and nurtured generations of researchers and practitioners.‚Ä®
