A legacy of a house and a box full of papers. The small house in a sought-after Yorkshire village should have sold quickly but did not. Missing her busy life in Scotland, where her husband runs the family farm, the narrator finds that writings left by her late aunt help pass the time. They tell of a more innocent age, when Aunt Mary was a child, a teenager and a young woman. A meeting with an old work colleague leads to suspicion that the fiancé lost at sea in the Second World War was not the only love of young Mary’s life. A bundle of letters could hold the key to the mystery.
