Mary lives in a nursing home. People come and go; they talk to her – or at her. But she hears the conversations of her visiting family and friends, and her observations of them, though locked in her mind, are sharp and humorous. Nigel Macbeth’s novel is tender without being sentimental and amusing without being trivial. Mary cannot express her enjoyment of life by speech or facial movement, but love and laughter are within her and about her – and she is still alive.
