Born in 1930 to poor parents in a depressed Lancashire mill town, the ailing and ultra-sensitive young Ernest Hall seems destined to vanish without trace.

But he doesn't. He first discovers a gift for music and becomes an outstanding classical pianist. Then the seeming impossibility of earning an uncompromised living from music leads to an office job in a struggling textile mill - ironically, the very life he wanted to escape from.

Volume II (to come) will continue this remarkable account, with the founding of Dean Clough and the author's return to music.
