Damn the Damn War
Returning horribly wounded from the Great War to his home village of High Siddon, Jack Donkin finds salvation from the horrors of the trenches in a teaching job at the village school. Presumed dead in action, he discovers his great love, Grace, has become engaged to another man, and Jack resigns himself to a lonely life of bachelorhood. Who, after all, would want to marry a one-armed man? Rose Morgan proves him wrong, and as the Second World War progresses, so does their romance. But war is cruel, and is destined to deal Jack another blow that requires all his stamina and trust in love to overcome. A compelling meditation on the fallout from the Great War, Damn the Damn War pulls the reader into a rural world long past and serves to highlight that human emotion and the pain of loss are two things that never change.
