Carnally Rocks

Carnally Rocks
Peter Murphy was born in a thatched cabin in 1881 at the foot of the Mourne Mountains in County Armagh. He was the eldest of seven in a household where 'unwelcome death made welcome space' and where merely surviving was a full-time occupation. On his wits and sharp intellect alone, the young Murphy struck his path out of poverty in pursuit of the priesthood. Yet, after a crisis of faith in Rome, he abandoned his calling and, aged 24, a ‘spoiled’ priest, he jumped ship for a new start in the colonies. First port of call: South Africa, where he chanced his arm among the diamond fields of Kimberley, before setting sail once more a decade later for Australia. Here he found his metier as a reporter on a Queensland country newspaper. Destiny, however, had other plans and at the outbreak of the Great War he found himself Gallipoli bound as a young Anzac. From Gallipoli to Cairo and then to England where new conflicts, a whole new war and family life were waiting in the wings. Spanning some of the key moments in 20th century history and told with acute observation and a poetic eye, this remarkable memoir of a life well lived was composed in the 1930s and 40s. It lay undiscovered by the author's family until only recently. A testament to a maverick spirit and resilience born of struggle, it is also a powerful and lingering account of a bygone world
