A Fatal Obsession
This is the first account of how two women climbers and two Sherpas lost their lives in blizzard conditions on the slopes of Himalayan peak Cho Oyu.
Cho Oyu was a male preserve for 60 years before in 1959 beachwear designer and eminent climber Claude Kogan led an all-women climb. Kogan was obsessed with scaling this, the sixth highest mountain in the world. She'd been thwarted on an expedition five years previously, when the male leader insisted they turn back in bad weather. Stephen Harper, a Daily Express journalist, was granted access to the women's story. As a man he had to travel one step behind the women and the (male) Sherpas, relying on runners to bring their accounts to him, (and avoid rival newspapers trying to scoop the story). Bringing together diaries, interviews and reminiscences, along with around 50 largely exclusive pictures, this vivid tale of travel through the Himalayas culminates in the assault on Cho Oyu, the deadly blizzard, and the aftermath.
