Joseph Selaby has moved from the town to the country - from a London hospital to a practice in a small rural town. He buys a notebook and starts jotting down his experiences, past, present and possibly future. Selaby's notes run the gamut of emotions both personally and through the people he treats and tries to cure. We come to know the doctor as an obstinate idealist and a moral man, and in time he reviews an old love affair and embarks with a mixture of courage and caution on a new one.
